In our workshop, we recently serviced a hydraulic cylinder which, after repair and reassembly, was still showing signs of leakage during the pressure test.

To determine the cause, we applied the penetrant testing method – a simple yet highly effective technique for detecting hidden defects. After spraying the cylinder with penetrant, we discovered a microcrack on the cylinder liner. Such damage is often invisible to the naked eye but can significantly affect the operational safety and reliability of the machine.

Since the crack compromised the strength and tightness of the cylinder, repair was not a permanent solution. To ensure long-term and safe operation of the hydraulic system, the recommended measure is a complete replacement of the cylinder liner.

Why is Pressure Testing Important?

Hydraulic cylinders operate under high loads and pressures. Even the smallest material defects can cause breakdowns, downtime, or dangerous situations in operation. That is why thorough pressure testing and additional checks such as penetrant inspection are crucial stages of every service.
